HART: Ridership rates in April 2013 "record breaking"

Hillsborough County, Florida-- The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) says April 2013 now holds the record for the fourth highest ridership rate in all of HART's history! 

According to a release sent Thursday, April's bus ridership of 1,257,728 is a 6 percent increase from the 1,182,531 recorded riders in April 2012.

April 1st may have set the tone for the month's success, as HART reps say it saw the greatest daily ridership of the month with nearly 55,000 riders.

Tampa, Florida -- Both directions of North MacDill Avenue will be closed between Heiter and Collins streets starting at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 6, to allow Tampa Wastewater Department crews to perform system repairs. Marked local detours will be in place for all traffic approaching this section of MacDill Avenue.

Resumption of normal traffic patterns are expected by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8, depending on weather conditions. Please use caution when traveling in this area. Drivers should seek alternate routes during this period.

Tampa, Florida-- South Tampa residents who frequently use MacDill Avenue may be affected by repairs scheduled  to begin Monday, May 6. 

According to the director of the city's Wastewater Department, the road will be closed in both directions between Heiter Street and Collins Street as crews perform system repairs. Marked local detours will be in place as a reminder, but commuters may want to plan an alternate route that morning, or allow for extra travel time.

Crews will be on site as early as 8 a.m.

Tampa, Florida -- Tampa Police reopened all lanes on Kennedy Boulevard between Hale Avenue and Dale Mabry around 8:30 Thursday morning after a semi crash involving a police cruiser.

Police say the 18-wheeler tried to make a wide U-turn and failed to observed the police vehicle.  The 18-wheeler's tank was ruptured spilling diesel into the roadway.

Hazmat responded to clean up the road. No word yet on any injuries.

South Tampa, Florida -- There will be a detour starting April 22 at the intersection of Cass Street and Oregon Avenue.

Both directions of West Cass Street and North Oregon Avenue will be closed at the intersection starting at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, April 22, to allow Tampa Water Department crews to perform system repairs.

Marked local detours will be in place for all traffic approaching the intersection.

Hillsborough County, Florida-- In honor of Earth Day, the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority says high school juniors and seniors are eligible to apply for an upcoming summit in Washignton D.C., where they'll have a chance to learn all about how eco-friendly public transportation can be.

Tampa, Florida -- Wouldn't it be interesting to see a monorail zipping through Westshore? Or maybe a high-speed train down the center of I-275? All of these ideas could become a reality if city and state leaders look to a big-city future.

The Westshore Business District could become a hub for the region's public transit system. This could include light rail, bus or rapid transit.
