Our Heroes Luncheon- 16 heroes honored, 8 students awarded

 

Tampa, Florida -- On May 31, the Tampa Convention Center will host the "Our Heroes Luncheon", to honor 16 local heroes and award eight Tampa students with scholarships.

The Luncheon takes place in recognition of the men and women of Law Enforcement and Fire Rescue in Hillsborough County who display everyday acts of heroism, which provide safety and security for the community. 

Sponsored by Sykes Enterprises, Incorporated., Susan and John Sykes and other Tampa Bay businesses, the event is the largest of its kind in the United States.

Education officials warn lower FCAT reading scores ahead

 

Tampa, Florida - State Education officials release more FCAT 2.0 scores Friday. After the state lowered the passing score in writing this week from a 4.0 to a 3.0, the number of students passing writing jumped from a third to more than 80% as expected.

The news isn't as good for high school students. Algebra 1 test scores for 9th and 10th graders show 44% passing and they did not do much better in reading.

State results on the FCAT 2.0 reading show 52% of 9th graders passed and 50% of 10th graders passed.

Tampa, Florida – The 43rd Annual Commencement Exercise of Hillsborough Community College (HCC) takes place today, Friday, May 4, in the Expo Hall of the Florida State Fairgrounds. 

According to HCC, this year’s commencement speaker will be the state of Florida’s Education Commissioner Gerald Robinson, a graduate of El Camino Community College.   Sundus Alsharif, winner of the 2012 HCC Commencement Speech Contest, will also speak at the event. 

HCC President Dr. Ken Atwater will lead the 2 p.m. Commencement Exercise.

Hillsborough County, Florida-- Tomorrow at the Florida State Fairgrounds, more than 500 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders will compete in a district wide mathematics competition.  

According to the Hillsborough County School District, math league starts with an individual competition consisting of 25 multiple choice questions followed by a team event, at 9:30 a.m.

Then, team rounds begin at 10:30 a.m., with trophies to be awarded at 1 p.m.

Hillsborough County, Florida-- According to a recent Hillsborough County release, the Board of County Commissioners will present their 2012 Ellsworth G. Simmons Good Government Award to University of South Florida President Dr. Judy Genshaft on Wednesday, April 18.

Ther ceremony will begin at 9 a.m., and will take place on the 2nd Floor County Commission Chambers, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd., in downtown Tampa.

McDonald's offers free FCAT breakfasts Monday morning

Tampa, Florida-- According to a recent release, more than 800 McDonald's restaurants in the state of Florida will provide a free breakfast to students on April 16, the first day of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT).

Students in grades three-11 can enjoy a complimentary Egg McMuffin, Apple Slices, and a low-fat milk or orange juice from any of the 188 McDonald's restaurants in the Tampa Bay area. 

Be sure to get there between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. to take advantage of this offer!
