Employers can tap young workers during Virtual Job Fair

Tampa Bay, Florida -- Employers can now have access to Tampa Bay's pool of young workers, ages 14 - 24, through a Virtual Job Fair May 13 - 19.

Buisnesses interested in participating are encouraged to post their open positions including summer internships, part-time, or full-time opportunities on vjf.worknetpinellas.org.  The job fair is free and simple to access. 

Swim lessons give children survival skills

South Tampa, Florida - It's a scary statistic for parents: Hillsborough County has the highest drowning rate for children under 4 years old.

But there is now a program to make sure not one more child drowns.

In six weeks, five days a week at just 10 minutes a time, your child can learn to float or swim.  It's called ISR self rescue lessons and parents we talked to say these lessons can mean the difference between life and death.

Tampa, Florida-- According to Tampa General Hospital:

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a life-threatening condition that is easily detected with a simple, non-invasive ultrasound screening.

If you are over 60 years of age, are a smoker, have diabetes, a cardiovascular or pulmonary disorder, high blood pressure, or a family history of AAA, screening is appropriate. If detected early, this condition can be treated before it leads to life-threatening consequences.

Why do they call it that? Outback Steakhouse

It's a restaurant name known around the world, but it got its start right here in Tampa Bay. Say "G'day!" to Outback Steakhouse.

Why do they call it Outback Steakhouse?

It wasn't cursed, but it was close. This building on Henderson Boulevard in South Tampa had been home to a series of restaurants.

A series of failures.

But Trudy Cooper and the three other people who decided to open the first Outback Steakhouse here in 1988 had it burned into their brains that their idea would work.

The service will take place at Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park, 601 Old Water Street, Tampa.

Kittens saved from death through woman's efforts

SOUTH TAMPA, Fla. -- Furry paws tap across a hardwood floor as tiny faces peer out from under a warm blanket at Katie Selman's house.

Selman fosters kittens, and currently houses more than 40 of them. About 60 more are staying at friends' houses until they get older.

"We're kind of like that bridge between death and life," Selman says.

She has a full-time job and five children, but feels passionate about constantly caring for kittens because they could be put to sleep if she doesn't.

One lane will be closed on the westbound Selmon Expressway (SR 618) from 22nd Street to Morgan Street from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. This sarted Sunday, April 29, and will last through Thursday May 3.
