Syphilis cases on the rise in Hillsborough County

Tampa, Florida- The Hillsborough County Health Department (HCHD) recently notified local physicians and the community that the number of cases of syphilis infections in Hillsborough County has risen nearly 65% since this time last year. 

So far this year, 126 cases of Infectious and early latent Syphilis have been reported, when during this same time period last year, 85 cases were reported, saiys HCHD in a release.

Tallahassee, Florida-- The Federal Emergency Management Agency, also know as FEMA, teams up with home improvement stores to provide information and advice on cleaning up and rebuilding homes after Tropical Storm Debby.

FEMA mitigation specialists - who can explain disaster-resistant ways to repair and rebuild -  will be in Highlands, Hillsborough and Polk counties beginning tomorrow, July 25, a release from the Joint Field Office in Tallahassee explains.

Tuberculosis reported at MacDill AFB

Tampa, Florida - A presumed case of tuberculosis (TB), involving an employee of MacDill Air Force Base, was reported to the Hillsborough County Health Department July 12.

As a precautionary measure, the individual has started TB drug therapy, is recovering in isolation. The Hillsborough Health Department says the person no longer poses a health risk to others. 

About 50 co-workers and community members who were at risk of exposure have been notified and will be tested in the coming days.

Hillsborough County, Florida-- Hillsborough County Public Schools and the Back-to-School Coalition of Hillsborough County are co-hosting opportunities for free physicals and immunizations on upcoming Saturdays.

Free school physicals are available to any child entering a Florida school for the first time in grades kindergarten through 12, Public Schools representatives said in a recent release.
