Volunteers needed to Rally for the River

Hillsborough County, FL -- Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful is still looking for volunteers for one of Tampa's largest annual volunteer events, the 24th Annual Hillsborough River & Waterway Cleanup.

On Nov. 19, after volunteers are sent out to 40 different cleanup sites throughout Hillsborough County, they will enjoy the Rally on the River with live music by Bobby & The Rockets and a free picnic lunch prepared by the Sickles High School Culinary Program.

Tampa Water Dept. offers grants to county teachers

Hillsborough County, FL -- The City of Tampa Water Department is offering Hillsborough County teachers classroom grants to help teach students how to use water more efficiently.

The grants ranging from $250 to $1,000, are available to teachers in grades K-12 whose schools are served by the Tampa Water Department.

In addition to teaching at a school in Tampa's service area, qualifying teachers must have completed a Project WET workshop.  Project WET is an interactive water education program with classroom activities and lessons correlated to the Sunshine State Standards. The workshops are provided free to educators by the Southwest Florida Water Management District.

Tampa Electric rebates prove popular

Tampa, FL -- Within minutes last week, Tampa Electric customers claimed the maximum $1 million in rebates the company made available to help fund the installation of new photovoltaic (PV) systems at homes and businesses in 2012.

Solar water heater rebates are still available on a first-come, first-served basis to residential customers planning to install new solar water heater equipment (up to $1,000 per installation).

Tampa Electric has committed to spend more than $1.5 million a year to assist customers interested in installing new solar PV and solar water heater systems. This is the second rebate offer as part of the five-year program. The company began accepting reservations online at tampaelectric.com/solarrebates at 8 a.m. Oct. 3.

Advisory for 3 Tampa area beaches lifted

Tampa, FL -- The health advisory that was issued on Sept. 9 for Picnic Island Beach, Bahia Beach and Davis Island Beach was lifted on Wednesday, Sept. 14.

According to the Hillsborough County Health Department, follow-up testing came back with satisfactory levels based on marine water bacterial indicator results as recommended by the EPA.

Initial sampling performed on Sept. 6 showed high levels of enterococci bacteria which caused a potential health risk to the public.
