Tampa, Florida-- The David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts recently was presented with two awards for its commitment to providing arts services to the community.

The Hillsborough County Elementary Music Educators Council (HCEMEC) presented the Straz Center with the Encore Award and the Boards of the University of South Florida Area Community Civic Association, Inc. (USFACCA) and the University Area Community Development Corporation, Inc.(UACDC) presented the Conservatory with its Community Partnership award.

Free Master Classes open to public at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts

Tampa, Florida--The public is invited, at no charge, to observe master classes being taught throughout July by some of the country’s most noted voice teachers to students from around the nation in the Patel Conservatory’s Classical Voice Intensive (CVI).

Following each master class, audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions and meet the instructors.

Tampa, Florida-- More than 60 local youngsters, in grades three through eight, are preparing to take the stage in the Patel Conservatory Youth Theater’s Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jr.

The show will be performed on Thursday, July 19 and Friday, July 20, at 7 p.m. in Ferguson Hall at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts.

Japan and Victorians at Plant Museum

Tampa, Florida --The Henry B. Plant Museum is presenting an exhibit, Japan and the Victorians.

It is a look at art in Japan and style that influenced the 19th century artists and culture.

According to the Museum, by 1854, Commodore Matthew C. Perry had opened up the island of Japan to the Western world and Victorians were eager to explore and costume Japan's exotic culture.

The exhibit runs each day through the end of the year from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Henry B. Plant Museum, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd. in downtown Tampa.

Local students Broadway-Bound

Tampa, Florida-- Two incredibly talented – and fortunate – high school students are in New York City this week competing at the National High School Musical Theater Awards, thanks to the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts.

Samantha Schneider-Behen and Jordan Rodnizki were awarded the Straz Center’s Broadway Stars of the Future Award at the Florida State Thespian Festival in March. Since the awards ceremony, however, Jordan's plans changed which gave the opportunity to another talented Thespian, Joshua Grosso.

Next Generation Ballet dancer in the running for Dance Spirit cover

Tampa, Florida-- Sixteen-year-old Hannah Bettes, a dancer with Next Generation Ballet (NGB) at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts downtown, has been selected as one of three finalists to be a cover model for the October issue of Dance Spirit Magazine.

Dance Spirit readers will select the winning dancer by voting for their favorite at www.DanceSpirit.com/cms. Voting began on June 15 at 9 a.m. and will close July 31.

Def Leppard & Poison

Def Leppard & Poison

Hillsborough County, Florida - Great Britain’s premiere arena rock band Def Leppard will return to the United States this summer with a massive "Rock of Ages" tour.

Dates for the first leg were announced with the only show in Florida at the Tampa Bay Times Forum on Saturday, June 30 at 7:00 p.m. Joining Def Leppard for this highly anticipated summer tour are rockers Poison and Lita Ford.
