"A Tribute to Summer" Film Festival

Tampa, Florida-- The weather’s still hot, but all students know summer is passing much too swiftly. With that in mind, Patel Conservatory students are creating a Short Film Festival with the theme, A Tribute to Summer.

Held Friday, August 10 at 7 p.m. in the TECO Theater at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, A Tribute to Summer will include an eclectic mix of short films devised by students from the Conservatory’s Making a Short Film camps. A couple of the film titles are Lucky Penny and Quack Attack.

Tampa, Florida - Voting begins today for the ELAPP Calendar Photo Contest. This contest, that celebrates Hillsborough County's natural beauty, highlights Hillsborough County's ELAPP sites.

Voting runs on Hillsborough County's facebook page from July 30 - Oct. 1.  Photos will be updated weekly.

Tampa, Florida-- The Arts Council of Hillsborough County is now accepting applications for its 2013 Cultural Development Grant Program.

"Grants are available to not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations and may be used for general operations or specific projects occurring between Oct. 1, 2012 and Sept. 30, 2013", The Arts Council Announced in a recent release.

The Cultural Development Grants are awarded each year on a competitive basis to organizations that offer cultural programs in Hillsborough.

Patel Conservatory offers scholarships for fall classes

Tampa, Florida-- If you have two minutes to spare, you might be a big winner at the Straz Center’s Patel Conservatory!

The Patel Conservatory is giving opportunities to talented, would-be performers by offering scholarships for 2012-13 performing arts classes, and basically all you have to do is upload a two-minute video and fill out an application form.

Kids Create Art Camp

Tampa, Florida-- Allow your child to dip their toes in visual and performance arts by signing them up for Kids Create Art Camp.

According to the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department, children are taught everything from pottery techniques and art history to sculpture, painting and much more. 

The camp, for children ages 8-12, is located at North Hubert Art Studio, 309 N. Hubert Ave.

Arts Council forced to buy insurance for artists

Tampa, Florida --The Hillsborough Arts Council meeting in downtown Tampa informed the council of new, expensive responsibilities.

The council will have to get and spend taxpayer money to gain liability insurance for every artist that goes in the Hillsborough School System.

Initially, the Arts Council was told it would have to pay $4,800 for the policy, but because it came up as the school year was ending, the council was able to cut the rate to $2,200 for this fiscal year.

Mayor excited about new Promenade of the Arts

Tampa, Florida -- Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn is excited about the near completion of the Promenade of the Arts, the section of Zack Street between Curtis Hixon Park and the Old Federal Courthouse.

In his weekly views, Buckhorn says, "Zack Street is the critical link between Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park on the river and the Classic Federal Court House, soon to become a boutique hotel. "

According to Buckhorn, "The increased pedestrian activity alone will stimulate economic growth and transform Zack Street."
