All month long, it's a Military May for our "Why do they call it that?" series.

This week, we look at the special way Tampa Bay remembers a local hero -- the first American to receive the Medal of Honor during the Iraq War.

Why do they call it Paul R. Smith Middle School?

What's the right way to honor a man whose last act was so heroic he was given his nation's highest recognition, the Medal of Honor?

You certainly name a school after him.

Selmon Expressway closures to cause congestion 'around the clock'

Tampa, Florida-- The Selmon "Expressway" may not live up to its name for the next few months as "around-the-clock" lane closures are expected to cause congestion.

The Florida Department of Transportation sent information on the closures in a release Wednesday afternoon:

"The westbound Selmon Expressway (SR 618) has been reduced to a single lane in the 22nd street area. It will remain in this condition around-the-clock for about three months (mid August)."

Tampa, Florida -- Follow three-year-old Izzy Dean, and she'll take you on a journey as quick as her attention span: from puppet shows to jam sessions, from the playground to experiences that most toddlers never have to face.

"You never think, 'Oh, my kid could have cancer,'" says her mom, Christine.

But two years ago, Christine noticed Izzy acting tired, turning pale, and bruising easily. Christine took her daughter to the doctor, thinking she might be anemic. In August 2011, Izzy was diagnosed with leukemia.

Tampa, Florida-- It's called Varela, and it's the latest trend in urban housing.

Ground breaking just took place at the corner of Lois and Spruce Streets with a planned 350 rental units, but its the amenities that have everyone talking.

Part of the "more for your money" strategy, the developer is all about exceeding expectations and it begins with a 20,000-square-foot clubhouse.
